How Rybelsus Works

How Rybelsus Works

The active ingredient, semaglutide, mimics the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone to help regulate blood sugar. After taking Rybelsus tablets, semaglutide signals the pancreas to release insulin when sugar levels are very high, helping to lower them. At the same time, it slows the passage of food through the stomach, helping maintain steadier glucose levels and reducing hunger. It also limits the amount of glucose released by the liver, further supporting overall blood sugar control.

FDA Boxed Warning for Rybelsus

FDA Boxed Warning for Rybelsus

Rybelsus Warning: Risk of Thyroid C-Cell Tumors

Animal studies have shown that semaglutide causes thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents. The risk increases with higher doses of semaglutide and longer duration of exposure. It is not known whether this risk applies to humans. Cases of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) have been reported with other drugs in the same class, but a direct causal relationship in humans has not been established. Because of this potential risk, Rybelsus is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or in those with MEN 2.

Important Safety Information on Rybelsus

Important Safety Information on Rybelsus

  • Rybelsus should not be taken if:
    • You or a close family member has ever been diagnosed with medullary thyroid cancer (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2).

  • Before starting Rybelsus, inform your healthcare professional if you have any existing or past health issues, especially if you:
    • have current or prior disorders affecting your pancreas or kidneys.
    • have experienced diabetes-related vision complications.
    • are planning to undergo surgery or a medical procedure requiring anesthesia or deep sedation.
    • are pregnant, trying to become pregnant, or planning pregnancy. It is unknown whether Rybelsus may affect an unborn child. Discontinue use at least two months before attempting to conceive.

    • This medication is not approved by the FDA for weight loss. Consult with your doctor if you want to use Rybelsus for weight loss.
What If I Miss a Dose of Rybelsus (Semaglutide)?

What If I Miss a Dose of Rybelsus (Semaglutide)?

If you miss a dose of Rybelsus (semaglutide) for type 2 diabetes, the safest approach is to skip it. After that, take your next Rybelsus tablet at the usual time the following morning. Because semaglutide stays in the body for a long time, missing one dose usually doesn’t cause any side effects of Rybelsus.

What Happens If You Take Too Much Rybelsus?

What Happens If You Take Too Much Rybelsus?

Taking too much Rybelsus, such as accidentally doubling your dose, can increase the risk of side effects. Rybelsus overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. In some cases, Rybelsus overdose may also raise the risk of very low blood sugar, especially if combined with other diabetes medications. If you suspect an overdose on Rybelsus, contact the poison control center immediately.
