Rybelsus is a prescription medication that is the first oral treatment of its kind for adults with type 2 diabetes. It functions by improving the body’s ability to control blood sugar. Rybelsus may lead to weight loss, but it is not FDA‑approved for weight management. This makes it a helpful option for people looking to improve both their blood sugar and overall health.

The active ingredient, semaglutide, mimics the body’s natural GLP-1 hormone to help regulate blood sugar. After taking Rybelsus tablets, semaglutide signals the pancreas to release insulin when sugar levels are very high, helping to lower them. At the same time, it slows the passage of food through the stomach, helping maintain steadier glucose levels and reducing hunger. It also limits the amount of glucose released by the liver, further supporting overall blood sugar control.

Rybelsus Warning: Risk of Thyroid C-Cell Tumors
Animal studies have shown that semaglutide causes thyroid C-cell tumors in rodents. The risk increases with higher doses of semaglutide and longer duration of exposure. It is not known whether this risk applies to humans. Cases of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) have been reported with other drugs in the same class, but a direct causal relationship in humans has not been established. Because of this potential risk, Rybelsus is contraindicated in patients with a personal or family history of MTC or in those with MEN 2.
If you miss a dose of Rybelsus (semaglutide) for type 2 diabetes, the safest approach is to skip it. After that, take your next Rybelsus tablet at the usual time the following morning. Because semaglutide stays in the body for a long time, missing one dose usually doesn’t cause any side effects of Rybelsus.
Taking too much Rybelsus, such as accidentally doubling your dose, can increase the risk of side effects. Rybelsus overdose symptoms may include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dehydration. In some cases, Rybelsus overdose may also raise the risk of very low blood sugar, especially if combined with other diabetes medications. If you suspect an overdose on Rybelsus, contact the poison control center immediately.
As of 2026, Rybelsus has been identified to interact with a total of 285 medications, in addition to having 6 documented disease-related interactions. Among these drug interactions, 16 are classified as major, 261 as moderate, and 8 as minor in severity. This includes:
The cost of Rybelsus tablets is high in the U.S., averaging $1,000 to $1,200 without insurance. Due to the high cost, people either don’t buy or skip using Rybelsus tablets. This puts their health journey at risk. Polar Bear Meds can help you deal with this issue. We source this medication from licensed Canadian pharmacies and offer savings of more than $651.
